A hammock can be a great addition to your outdoor space as a place to relax and unwind after a day at work. I remember my mom putting my sister on our hammock when she was a baby and gently rocking her to sleep under the trees. We loved swinging on that hammock and spent many summer days dreaming under the summer sky. These days it’s my husband and kids that get the most use out of our hammock. Even our dog seems to like getting on and laying around!
Our hammock was made from a greenish-gray army type canvas. It wasn’t very pretty, but we loved it just the same. Today’s hammocks for backyard living areas come in many different types and styles. Much nicer than the ones from when I was a kid.
Brazilian Hammocks – Are made in Brazil from a tight woven cotton. These hammocks come in a variety of colors and patterns. Most have beautiful side panels that look similar to a crocheted curtain. Because they have a tight weave, they do not ventilate well and are more suitable for cooler climates.
Nicaraguan Hammocks – Are hand-woven from 100% soft-spun cotton. Can be used indoors or outdoors. These have crocheted edges and beautifully done macrame sides.
Mayan Hammocks – Made in Mexico mostly by women to help supplement their incomes. Comes in a wide variety of bright colors. Made of cotton. These hammocks are very comfortable and durable.
Rope Hammocks – Made from loosely woven polyester or cotton roping. The roping used today is a lot softer and more comfortable. These hammocks provide plenty of ventilation.
Fabric Hammocks – These hammocks can be broken down into 3 different categories:
– Single fabric hammocks are made from a treated fabric to resist mildew and fading.
– Quilted fabric has a batting in between the fabric for added comfort.
– Pillow-Top fabric has a thicker batting for extreme comfort and softness.
Camping or Travel Hammocks – Are usually made from a thin nylon sometimes called ‘parachute silk’. Most come with straps to hang onto trees, if camping. Extremely compact to fit into backpack or suitcase.
Poolside Hammocks – Made from quick dry fabrics usually of polyester fibers. Made to withstand water and sun.
Nothing can give a homeowner more pleasure than pulling into the driveway and seeing all that they have accomplished. A beautiful yard is a reflection of an equally beautiful home. By asking some questions and doing a little planning first, all your home landscape designs and ideas can become a reality.
