Perhaps the most challenging part of small garden design is staring at that blank sheet of paper for the first time.
While the emptiness of the paper invites you to let your imagination run wild, that same emptiness also seems to impose a great deal of responsibility at the same time.
I have watched many people literally “freeze” at these first steps, afraid to make the first mark less it be wrong and mess up the whole project at some later point.
My advice is to relax! Let your creative juices flow and draw whatever you want. At this stage of the small garden design, it is very hard to be “wrong” because nothing has happened that can’t be put right by simply starting over. And, please believe me, it is a lot easier to start a new drawing than it is to pull out a couple of day’s work installing plants and beds (which I have had to do).
So, take courage and start drawing! Here are just a couple of tips that you might want to consider as you work on your design:
Start with a whole site plan to locate your small garden optimally
Consider designing “against” your existing plot lines
Pay attention to your textures
Don’t forget to add height to your small garden design

Deciding on those great backyard ideas can sometimes be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! There are a few “must haves” when designing your backyard. By starting with the backyard ideas that everyone should have in their backyard you can quickly and even inexpensively transform your backyard. If you have an empty backyard starting with these Must Have backyard ideas will speed up you backyard enjoyment. For those who already have a landscaped backyard but feel like something is missing, these steps can help.
1) You will first need an outdoor sitting area. An outdoor living area has almost become a necessity for homeowners. Homes selling with these outdoor living spaces tend to sell faster and for more money than those without. To start you will first need a firm place to set your furniture. There are many different decking ideas and patio ideas to choose from. When deciding on materials, use something that will accentuate home’s style. The idea is to bring the inside spaces to the outside and increase your living square footage.
Tip: For those of us who don’t live in perfect climates, protect yourself from the elements. Patio and deck coverings protect you and your furniture from unwanted damage due to wind, storms and sun. Watching the rain is much more enjoyable from under a roof! Don’t be afraid of incorporating things that are normally considered indoor items.
2) Incorporate movable landscaping into your backyard. By this I mean potted plants, sculptures, fountains, etc. that can be moved. Using what I call movable landscaping, you can quickly and easily change the layout of your backyard. Just as you change the furniture arrangement of your living room, this gives you the ability to inexpensively give yourself a brand new backyard. You can even create partitions that easily separate the different areas of the yard. Potted plants are a must have because they create that lived in feel. They can be brought inside during the winter and make your home more lively during those cold winter months.
3) A water feature is an essential part of a backyard landscaping. It is just as functional as it is beautiful. Water features can be many things such as fountains, ponds, pools, birdbaths, etc.. Depending on the size of water feature you choose, it can greatly regulate your backyard temperature. On a hot day sitting near a fountain can reduce the temperature to a more tolerated level. The sound of water is soothing and welcoming. It will make your time outdoors much more enjoyable.
Tip: Scale the water feature to the size of your backyard. If you have a small backyard an Olympic sized pool probably would not work, just as if you have a large backyard choose something a little larger than those tabletop fountains.
When you have these three simple must have backyard ideas in place you will know why they are essential to your backyard landscaping ideas. Anything you do in addition to a sitting area, movable landscaping and water features will be icing on the cake!
