Cutter Backyard Bug Control Reviews

As a home gardener, I’ve turned away from the mass-production of food as much as possible. With rising concerns about food safety, environmental impact and soaring prices, my family and I have decided to grow as much food as possible in our backyard garden.

There is a plethora of information available on home gardening, from books and magazines to the Internet and clubs. The information can be overwhelming. I’ve found the best way to learn is to dig right in and learn from mistakes.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made is not protecting my family’s crops from pests. I opted to keep our garden organic and not use any pesticides, but the insects ate more of my organic garden than I did.

What To Look For When Selecting Insect Control

In attempt to keep our crops safe, I started researching online to see what organic pest control solutions were available. The insect control solutions had to meet my following criteria:

  • USDA-National Organic Program Compliant
  • Effective
  • Easy to Use
  • Safe
  • No Lasting Effects on the Soil
  • Economical

Many of the insect control solutions I found met some of my criteria, but not all. Many did not kill a wide-range of insects. Others were tedious. One product, EndAll Insect Killer by Safer Brand, was the clear winner in my online research.

An Organic and Effective Insect Control Product

EndAll Insect Killer is highly effective at combating pests because it kills insects in all stages of development, from egg to adult. Moreover, it was the only insect control I could find that not only killed the insects that were attacking my plants, but also 44 others.

EndAll Insect Killer eliminates 45 different insects, including including various beetles (even Japanese beetles), aphids, caterpillars and larvae (including gypsy moth caterpillars and tent caterpillars), mealybugs, stink bugs and more.

USDA-National Organic Program compliant and Organic Materials Review Institute-listed® for organic gardening, EndAll Insect Killer is safe to use in the home garden. It leaves no traces on plants and completely breaks down in the environment to elements nature and my plants can use. It is so safe it can be used up-to-the day of harvest to keep plants protected during the entire growth period.

EndAll Insect Killer comes in a ready-to-use spray, unlike some other insect control products that require mixing or your garden hose. And, it’s economical. This is the product I’ll be using on my next organic garden!

Backyard Buzzing

When last we left our backyard beekeepers of Port Clinton (BBPC), the sun was setting earlier, the leaves were gently falling from the trees and the hum of the hive was growing faint.

Fast forward to July and summer and once again, the busy buzz of the bee is bounding about the coastal Port Clinton landscape.

Our beekeepers have spent an industrious winter managing the hives, planning for growth and developing new bee strategies. Honey has already begun to be gathered and consumed and once again, its popularity far outweighs the supply available from the backyard. The beekeepers are growing more adept at knowing where to look for and spot the queen bees and the fear factor has grown as faint as the buzz during a lakeside thunderstorm.

During the colder months, however, the BBPC spent time gathering ideas and information until the time came to gather honey again. One of the additions for this season are nuc boxes or nucleus colony starter hives. These starter hives are used for keeping a swarm of bees, starting a new colony and queen, overcrowding control, storage of spare queens and combining together to build one strong colony which will survive winter in harsher climates.

The main reason for the nucs was to have a suitable place in which to produce new queens for brood rearing. As the nucs are smaller than the average hive, the bees have an easier time of controlling temperature and humidity which is essential for the rearing. If a nuc doesn’t contain a queen but has eggs, the worker bees can produce a queen from one of the eggs. Nucs are also useful in discouraging swarming. In a larger colony, swarming can be a concern. Nucs allow the beekeepers to separate frames from the colony. The frames housing queen cells and the extra bee population form the basis of a new colony. With this population decrease, the urge to swarm diminishes leaving both hives to drone on developing bees, queens and more quality honey, propolis and honeycomb.

One of the side benefits which the beekeepers take advantage of is allergy control. Although there is no scientific evidence of the healing powers of bee pollen, some of the conditions which bee pollen has been noted in relieving are asthma, allergies, skin conditions, chemotherapy side effects, stomach issues, alcoholism as well as general health maintenance.

According to Beth Gilman, backyard beekeeper and co-owner of the Lockwood Honey House, her family is enjoying the benefits of the natural bee byproduct.

“Everyone around here is complaining of cottonwood allergies, I’ve had none this year. No allergy medicine whatsoever. I attribute it to the pollen. I cannot go on enough about what a difference it’s made in allergies.”

Bee pollen is available in health food stores as supplements or in the natural state such as is gathered by beekeepers. Bee pollen contains protein, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. When looking for bee pollen, make sure not to confuse it with natural honey, bee venom or honeycomb. Also, use common sense; if you have an allergy to bees, bee pollen could cause a serious reaction. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take bee pollen as it not deemed safe.

When taking natural bee pollen, take it as a short-term remedy and make sure it’s been prepared correctly for consumption. Bee pollen needs to be freeze dried, or put in the freezer for at least three days to kill any organisms which may be present. Also, store bee pollen in the refrigerator to prevent botulism. And always consult with your doctor when beginning any new health care regimens.

Another beneficial byproduct is propolis or bee glue, the resinous substance used to build and maintain the hive. Propolis has a range of distinctive coloring from golden brown to black brown and is made up of resinous compounds, balsam, beeswax, pollen, oils and a variety of lesser components. As with bee pollen, care should be taken with propolis, but health benefits are rumored to range from antibacterial and antifungal abilities to immune system assistance.

Backyard Discovery Playsets

With summer nearly here, the days and nights are growing warmer. Getting out and enjoying the sunshine is first and foremost on everyone’s mind. The outdoors is calling to the entire family and school, in many places, offers children a full summer away from studies. What will your kids be doing this summer?

Ideally, your kids will be happy all summer long, but inevitably, one of them will tell you that they are bored and want something to do. Children, for all that they will deny the statement, desire structured playtime and actual learning. Giving them that kind of structured playtime is in their best interests, as well as your own. Keep your kids in the habit of learning over the summer with a few new ideas that will help them to stay interested and may give them a lifelong love of the outside world.

Taking your kids to the park, to a new play area, or even just to your own back yard on a discovery adventure can offer wonderful rewards for them and for you.

Offering a little bit of one on one time to your children is a great way to keep them occupied, as well as to teach them a little about the outdoor world.

Taking your children outside opens up entirely different worlds to them. It teaches them a vast amount about biology, ecology, and the small backyard discovery forays may help to alleviate some of that summer boredom that eventually sets in.

Before you take them to any new area, visit it yourself and survey what you can expect to find there. Get familiar with the area and the route that you will need to take to see the things you’d like to emphasize. Define the things that there are to see in that park or wilderness area.

From plants to animals, you’ll find new discoveries in virtually any area of the world. Some of the newest and best adventures will be within hailing distance from your house. They may be in your own back yard. Small animals or birds make great focal points, or an area with a pond will help you to explain to them how the watery ecosystem actually functions.

Bear in mind what your kids can expect to see, but also what they can expect from the area. Is it conducive to loud play or will they need to be a bit quieter. Typically, that is not the case, but a great deal will depend on the area that you select.

Once you’ve gone over the whole area and reviewed what you can expect, then plan a mini lesson based on the results of your scouting expedition. When you take your kids to the area in question, know ahead of time what you plan to ask them to do or to find.

Know what you want to teach them and set a clear goal for what you’d like them to come away from the area having learned. Make it fun and interactive.

Give them clear ideas of what you expect from them during your backyard discovery. Add a little structure to it and it will be welcomed by your children.

Plan activities to be incorporated into your outdoor adventure. Offer some type of fun exercise such as time spent on few a Gorilla playsets, or a craft and, incorporate a snack.

Know what you will be doing and have it planned out to the end to achieve the greatest success. If you plan to ask them to make dioramas outdoors, be sure that you take supplies with you and that there are tables available for the children.

Expect that there will be questions about the area and the wildlife or plant life that you are viewing. Take some time to review it yourself and get familiar with the area so that you are in a position to offer at least adequate teaching and to answer the questions your kids are certainly going to ask.

Spending the time outside brings your kids closer to the world of nature, and very often brings them closer to you.

You may utilize varying types of lighting fixtures such as path lights, spotlights, deck lights and floodlights to work with your plan. The spots and floods, when directed to several different ways, may give unique lighting effects. Such that a spotlight can be used to provide lighting from the house by directing to a specimen tree, or you can change the effect by positioning the light at the ground level. Depending on where you use each light fixture, you can achieve several special effects as well.

Installing landscape lighting for outdoors is not difficult at all, and usually you can buy your lighting fixtures with a kit that has everything inside that allows you to do the installation on your own without needing the help of a professional electrician.

This is why whether you are installing a new design into your home or revising your present landscape architecture and design, be sure to incorporate outdoor landscape lighting to your investment so you not only boost the curb appeal of your home but also make it more secure, safe and pleasant to be in.

Concrete Backyard Ideas

Don’t get rid of that eye sore of a shed that has taken over the back corner of your backyard. Stop being embarrassed every time you have guest over because no matter how nice the rest of your yard is, that rust bucket keep screaming “look at me, look at me.” Well, it is time you give visitors to your home a good reason to look. In just one weekend you will have created a backyard oasis that not even you will be able to resist. Have I convinced you to give that large piece of garden sculpture a chance at a new life? Good. Now let’s get started.

One word of advice, GET AN EARLY START! This is without a doubt a weekend project. The earlier in the day you start, the better time management you will have.

Get rid of the old and make way for the new:The first thing on the agenda to do is clean out that old shed. Get rid of everything. You need to start with a clean slate. The best way to tackle this task is to find a new home for these items and instead of stock piling everything over to the side, go ahead and place them in their new permanent storage location. This will prevent you from having to do a lot of extra work later on. Besides, when you finish creating your new backyard getaway, you don’t want your old storage items blocking your view.

Purchase all the items you will need:Unfortunately, this project will cost you a little money. But, to your surprise, you can accomplish your goals for under $200 depending on how many of these items you already have.

1) You are going to have to paint the shed in order to breathe new life into it. Buy a gallon of GOOD primer and a gallon of EXCELLENT exterior paint. The qualities of these two items are vital for establishing longevity of your paint job. This is not the area where you want to try a save a few bucks. If you do it right today, your shed will still look like a great backyard getaway and be just as inviting fifteen years from now.

Be careful to purchase paint that the manufacturer has created specifically for the material your shed is made from. If your shed is made from metal, you will need a paint designed to cover metal. If your shed is made from wood, you will need a paint designed to cover wood. No matter what your shed is made from, you will need to purchase exterior paint and not paint created for interior surfaces.

This is the time to choose a bright color to paint your shed. Choose a color that will draw the eye of your guest to the shed. Do not be afraid to use color. Your best option is to pick a color that will contrast against the color of your planting material.

2) Purchase 6 LARGE potted plants. These will be used to create a lush garden appeal as well as draw the eye of the visitor to your shed. Try and purchase plants that are, or will be in a very short amount of time, at least five feet tall (including the pot). They should have a look of maturity, be lush and full in nature, and very healthy. DO NOT purchase trees. They will grow to be too tall and eventually overpower the space. You want to create something that is at eye level. Some suggestions are flowering plants or palms.

3) An alternative to the 6 potted plants would be to purchase climbing roses or one of your other favorite vines. Plant them in the ground and allow them to climb up both sides of the shed. Either a store bought trellis or a trellis you have created from scratch would be ideal for achieving the desired effect.

4) Purchase decorative pots to house your large potted plants. The larger the pots the better. Keep in mind that your potted plants need room to grow so buy large, very large pots. Make sure they can withstand the changes in the outside climate. If you live in one of the northern states, your pots must be able to withstand extreme cold. If you live in one of the southern states, your pots must be able to endure heat waves.

Do not be afraid to mix and match the colors of your pots. Purchase bright colors that catch the eye from a distance and have interesting detailing on them. Do not go for plain and boring. You are trying to create the WOW factor and playing it safe is the last thing you want to do. Now is the time to take advantage of the use of color.

5) Purchase additional planting material to fill in the gaps between the large potted plants. These should be plants that are planted directly into the ground. Plant as much flowering plants as you can squeeze into this space. The idea here is to create a lush garden along both sides of the shed. Do not worry about over-crowding, as the plants out grow the space you can dig them up and plant them somewhere else in the yard. You want your garden shed getaway to have that mature look today, not two years from now.

6) Purchase flooring for your new shed. This is optional and should only be purchased if your budget allows. If your shed is already sitting on a concrete slab you could lay decorative tile down, stain it, or have it resurfaced and stamped. There are many decorative styles your concrete slab can be stamped in. However, this is a job for a professional and by far the most expensive method I have mentioned. If your shed is sitting on the ground, indoor/outdoor carpet might be a good option.

7) You are going to need a small table and two chairs. These are items you may already own. If you must purchase them, be sure to consider the inside space of your shed. There is only so much space inside a shed. You do not want to purchase a table and chair set that is too large.

8) Purchase two outdoor wall candle lanterns and one outdoor hanging candle lantern. Two will be used to light the entryway into the shed (place one on each side) and one will be used to provide lighting inside the shed. The Candle Lantern Shop has excellent choices of outdoor hanging candle lanterns that sit on its own stand.

Now it is time to convert that old shed into your backyard getaway

a) Prime the inside and outside of the shed.

b) Paint the inside and outside of the shed.

c) Lay your flooring material.

d) Place your potted plants on both sides and in the front of the shed. Begin by placing one potted plant on each side of the entryway. Be sure they are centered and attractively invites your guests in. Then place two on the left side of the shed and two on the right side of the shed.

e) Fill in the spaces between the potted plants with the additional plant material you have purchased. The more flowering plants you install the better. You are trying to create a focal point using the color from the flowering plants and contrast created by the large scale of the potted plants.

f) Install the outdoor wall candle lanterns (one on each side of the entryway) at least 12 inches from the doorway.

Placement of the wall candle lanterns is extremely important. You do not want to be more than 12 inches from the entryway because the candles are open flame and will cause a safety hazard. You do not want to be too far away from the entryway either. After all, the idea is to provide a lighting source for safe entry into the shed during the evening hours.

Be sure to carefully measure the distance from the ground to the height where you will be drilling a hole for the screws that will hold the candle lantern up on the wall. You want both wall candle lanterns to be of equal height and distance from the doorway. Repeat the measurement that was used on the left side to the right side of the entryway.

g) Add your table and chairs inside the shed

h) Place your outdoor hanging candle lantern within close proximity of your table

i) If your shed has electricity, place a nice table lamp on the table. If your shed does not have electricity, consider purchasing additional candle wall sconces or a candle chandelier from The Candle Lantern Shop and install them within the shed.

j) Add a small potted plant here and there to bring the outside in. Fill a decorative pot with a mixture of colorful flowering plants. This is a great way to add seasonal color.

k) Take a step back and look at what you have created. Add any additional accessories you may need to help create a warm and welcoming environment. Look at the shed as though it is an outside “garden room.” Because accessories will be protected from the weather, consider items from around the house that will help you transform the shed into a place that is calm, soothing, and inviting. You want this to be a place that you will enjoy having your morning coffee or reading a good book or just a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As you can see, converting your old shed into your favorite getaway can be accomplished within ten easy steps. So, the next time you look out your kitchen window and see that old garden shed of an eye sore, do not get dismayed. Go to your local garden center, pick up a few items, and transform that worn down shed into a refurbished oasis.

Backyard Arbor

Need help transforming a boring backyard into a place that you are proud of and what to spend time in?  If so, a new wood pergola might be just what the doctor ordered.   The backyard for many people is a sour spot in the scope of decorating for so many people.  Interior wise, there are so many great places to find information on what to do, or what not to do with your space.  Outdoors wise there is not the same consistency of accurate information and people are frustrated with what to do.  In this article, you will find how adding a wooden pergola or wood  arbor to your space will help transform it into a backyard sanctuary that you want to spend time in.

The term pergola is an open structure that gives a sense of style, texture, and visual weight to a space, while providing intimacy, shade and order to a location.  It is also called an arbor by many people with the technical differences being an arbor is a outdoors structure that covers a path, walkway or other circulation area where people move through.  Normally, an arbor is a simple archway that is constructed of woods (cedar, redwood, or pressure treated pine) or a manmade material like resin.  When the arbor was first designed it was made out of branches and leaves, while today’s modern arbors are designed out of a latticework that plants can climb and cling onto.

When considering a new outdoors pergola or arbor for your yard, you do not need to have vines and plants clinging to the arbor or pergola.  Today, it is normal for the wood structure to be free of these traditional decorative natural elements and let the beauty of the wood piece stand alone as a work of art in your garden or patio.  Wooden arbors make great entranceways for people coming into a new area like a flower garden, desk area, or even to start a walk down a path.  Most people looking at these type of outdoors structures choose a wood arbor or wooden pergola just because they look beautiful and have a sense of quality about them.  Also, being made of wood will match many different styles of furnishings and outdoor decor while adding a natural beauty to your garden or backyard.  As for styles, a wood pergola can be purchased in a full variety of shapes, styles, sizes and price points depending on what you are looking for.

What to Look for in a Quality Pergola or Arbor?

Western red cedar wood is the standard for which all other materials are judged against.  It is the most popular material for a couple of reasons. First of all western red cedar is very durable and is natural resistant to insect damage and rotting over time, compared to other natural wood products.  In its natural state it has a rich color that turns a light grey when left untreated, easy to work with when putting a project together and last for years.  At the end of the day, it all depends on what you really want and your own personal circumstances.

The most important element in the design of a new cedar pergola is the style of the top either in a horizontal flat topped pergola or arched arbor over an entryway into your backyard.  Some companies put in much effort to add details to the ends of each board for added style and sophistication.  This is where you see real craftsmanship and normally these companies only work with the best materials, that is the western red cedar woods. Others to save money and time have a more simple approach to their design.  They use resin or plastic as a building material and are able to market their product to the consumer at a discount pergola price point because of these techniques.  A smart home owner will have to determine if a quality cedar pergola or cedar arbor with great craftsmanship is what they want for their garden.  Or is saving some money, and buying a discount pergola more in line with what they are looking for.

If you keep these pergola buying tips in mind when you are thinking about transforming your backyard into your own personal sanctuary, you will be on your way to having a space that you and your family will enjoy for many years to come.  If you want more information on outdoor structures including cedar pergolas click here on outdoor structures learning center for added learning.

Backyard Grape Trellis

The grape planting process requires a lot of effort and dedication on the part of the growers. Since there are great chances of fruit being damaged or diseased, it is essential to collect relative information about the various aspects of grape planting. One of its most important aspects is to construct suitable grape trellis. As grape plants are used to grow along the ground, the trellis is the means of providing support to the growing grapes.

A Significant Part

The primary purpose of the trellisis to provide support to the growing grape plant in the backyard or farm. Being a significant part of grape planting, the trellisis attracting the attention of grape growers all around the world. It is recommended that even before you start grape cultivation; make sure to construct the appropriate trellis for perfect grape growth. A decorative arbor is a good choice for 4-5 grape vines cultivated at your backyard. Whereas finely constructed grape trellis are good for huge or commercial level grape cultivation.

Various Available Grape Trellis Types

Anciently, people were not aware about the benefits and usage of a trellis. Today, there are a wide range of trellis types available in different size and shapes. You can either go for any type of trellis depending on its constructing material, which include iron, wood, steel, or aluminum. Proper choice of a well-constructed grape trellis helps in providing support as well as essential elements like water, sunlight, and maintenance to the fruit. Moreover, a good choice of the perfect trellis also helps in performing other related aspects of grape cultivation like weeding and pruning.

Building a Good Grape Trellis

After you are finished with your choice of the appropriate post or pole type, (generally available in steel, iron, aluminum, wood, etc.) your next task is to build a strong and supportive trellis for your grapes. It requires a number of steps that need to be followed with utmost care and concentration. These include-

· Firstly, tightly attach stretched two or three wires to a pole/post, and tie them alongside neatly.

· Adjust them in order to have enough power to control the weight of grapevines, especially during wind

· Poles used for attaching should have 4 inches diameter, with at least 8 feet length, and need to be dig at least 2 inches deep into the earth

· Essentially take care to dig poles apart at least within the range of 21, 24, or 28 feet.

It is to be noted that posts or poles used for grape trellis should be strong enough to last for more than 20 years for perfect grape cultivation. Also it is recommended to use galvanized wires for the process. In winters, it is suggested to use a tall trellistype (with 8 feet poles), whereas in summers, short trellistype (with 3-4 feet poles) is preferred.

In order to give a fancy and attractive look to your backyard, try innovative ways to add creativity to the grape trellis. Decorate the trellis as per your choice and life style. For serious grape planting, professional grape growers usually opt for simple and serviceable trellis types.

Townhouse Backyard

There are many things you can do to attract backyard birds into your yard for you and your family’s viewing pleasure. Attracting the largest variety of wild birds to your own backyard can be rewarding providing you follow some basic guidelines. Where you live doesn’t really matter- in an apartment, townhouse or single family dwelling, in the city, suburbs or country.
Bird watching is one of the fastest growing sources of outdoor recreation in the country.

The most effective way to attract the widest variety of birds to your yard is to put out separate feeders for each type of food and placing them around your backyard. Supplemental bird feeders and bird baths will draw large numbers of birds where you can see and appreciate them. You will want to consider different types of feeding stations such as a platform feeder for ground feeding birds, hanging feeders for perching birds and suet feeders for insect eating birds. It’s healthier for the birds to get the their food at a feeding station, rather than off the ground.

If birds pass through your yard, but don’t seem to want to stay, it’s most likely because your yard doesn’t provide a varied, long-term food supply. All bird species have their own unique food requirements that will change as the seasons change. It’s very important for you to learn the food habits of the birds you wish to attract. You can then plant the appropriate trees, shrubs, and flowers to provide the fruits, berries, seeds, acorns, and nectar.

Trying to transform your yard into a haven for birds can be very frustrating so plan on making gradual changes by Identifying one or two areas to concentrate on for the first year. Many of the birds that visit your backyard feeders and baths may stay and nest in nearby trees. Most of them will not nest in boxes. You should consider their food and shelter requirements in your landscape plans.

When you are developing a long-term water source for your garden, you will want to plan for the type of water feature that birds adapt to most quickly: a shallow, rough-bottomed pool of still water. Birds will shy away from water that is more than 2″-3″ deep. The sound of loud, moving water is a dynamic attraction to most birds and will draw them from longer. A dripper or circulating pump can add just the right sound to attract wild birds. Water becomes a problem when it rests at the bottom of a bird house.

A roof with sufficient slope and overhang offers some protection. Water for birds needs to be as close to a faucet as possible, for purposes of refilling and cleaning. You will also want to empty and scrub the birdbath every 2-3 days in the summer, to prevent algae and bacteria from contaminating the water and to attract backyard birds.
